I really enjoy visiting schools and libraries—seriously, if I hadn’t started writing, I’d probably still be in school!
My family’s adventures through Mexico sparked my interest in Mayan culture. I read journal entries from my own travels and show how I used those experiences in Jungle Crossing. I also talk about the ancient Mayans’ contributions in math, astronomy, and chocolate, of course! This presentation emphasizes how learning about other cultures enriches our own lives. Appropriate for ages 9 and up.
Turning Real Life Into Fiction
I’ve been keeping a diary since my sophomore year in high school. In this presentation I demonstrate how my real life experiences show up in my novels (in a more exciting way). I also talk about my writing process, dealing with failure, learning to revise, and never giving up on your dreams. Presentation tailored for 3rd-5th grade, middle school, or high school.
Body Image, Being Yourself, and Finding Your Passion
(in the creative sense of the word!)
I’ll discuss the themes in My Big Nose And Other Natural Disasters and Swoon At Your Own Risk. Using my characters as examples, we’ll discuss how media influences our feelings about our appearance, self-worth, and relationships. Appropriate for ages 9 and up.
Writing Workshops for Elementary School through High School
I love teaching students about the craft of writing fiction. Workshops include exercises about generating story ideas, creating unique characters, fun plots, and writing dialogue, action, and description. Presentation tailored for 3rd-5th grade, middle school, or high school.
Writing Workshops for Grownups
As a Regional Advisor for the Society of Children’s Book Writers & Illustrators (SCBWI), I have spoken on a variety of topics including Submissions 101, Crafting a Novel, Generating Ideas, and Revision. I’m happy to create a new presentation for your conference or workshop.
I’d love to visit your classroom, library, or book club via Skype. Twenty minute visits are free. Please contact me for information about longer presentations.
Next to writing, and maybe chocolate, speaking is my favorite thing—so I’m happy to create new presentations that fit your particular needs.
